Sparkle Kitty by Breaking Games – Review

Theme and What is it?

You are an amazing princess kitty trying to escape a magical tower where you have been trapped by a dark force.  But you are no ordinary princess. Instead of waiting for your Knight in Shining Armor, you take matters into your own hands. You utter a bizarre mix of words that turn into special magical spell combinations to set you free.

Gameplay Mechanics

Sparkle Kitty is a hand management party game. Each player selects a princess and is dealt ten cards. Without looking at their hand, players randomly select five of the ten cards and place them under their princess to form a tower. The point of the game is to free yourself from the tower. The first player to do so is the winner. Players take turns playing cards on top of two decks. They must match color, symbol or the word on the card. When they play a card, they have to shout out the name of the spell. This often leads to great laughs. Players can also play a dark magic card, which is placed next to their princess in the tower. Now when a card is played, a word on the dark magic card must be said as well as the spell name. Yes, even more hilarity. Players remove tower cards by clearing their hands, playing double words, and using bonus spells that act as wilds. First player to pick up their last tower card escapes and wins!

Initial Impressions

I was curious how a game where you just say random words would be to play. It didn’t disappoint. The word combinations are random and different and create sayings that you would hardly ever say. If you do say things like this all the time, I want to know what you do for a living!

Game Build Quality

Sparkle Kitty is a game of cards. The cards are a good thickness, since there is a lot of shuffling and use with the cards. It may be a good idea to sleeve them so they last a long time. Although when sleeved, the cards may not fit back in the awesome box the game comes in.

Artistic Direction

There isn’t much artistic direction with Sparkle Kitty. The most artistic thing about the game is the Princess card that you choose at the beginning of the game. They thought of every kind of princess out there from flowery and girly to punk and tomboy. With so many creative and difference princesses to choose from, it was hard to decide which one you want in your tower.

Fun Factor

Sparkle Kitty makes you say the most random and silly words. Simple words that when combined bring out a schoolgirl giggle in you. My best spell was “Mega Jiggle Devastation” I mean come on! When does THAT phrase come up in normal conversation?  You feel like you are saying tongue twisters at times and other times you don’t even know what came out of your mouth. Let’s not forget how you can spoil another player’s game by adding cards to the bottom of their tower. Especially when they are one card away from taking the win!

Age Range & Weight

Sparkle Kitty ‘s suggested age range is for ages 6 and older. As long as they can read the words, I think it is a game they can play. You may have to prompt them a few times, but it’s an easy game to catch on to and follow.

Conclusions

Sparkle Kitty is a simple, easy to explain, game with random sayings that you can introduce to beginning gamers.  I think even full-grown men would enjoy this game and the many random phrases that are created. It is silly, it is girly and it is full of random phrases that will have you laughing through the night.
